At large hospitals such as the John Hunter Children’s Hospital, 3 different beads programs are run for children admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, the Haematology Clinic and the Oncology Clinic.
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
The Tiny Star Beads program at The John Hunter Children’s Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit offers babies little rewards for their medical procedures in the form of unique beads.
The Tiny Star Beads can be collected from the NICU Baby Buddies, twice a week from the NICU Volunteer room. A Baby Buddy will give you the beads your baby has earned.
Haematology Clinic
The Little Star Beads for Haematology Kids program at John Hunter Children’s Hospital offers children going through treatment tokens to record their medical procedures and milestones in the form of unique beads.
After every test or medical procedure, the Haematology Staff will give you your child’s beads the next time you are at the hospital.

Oncology Clinic
The Little Star Beads for Oncology Kids program at John Hunter Children’s Hospital offers children going through cancer treatment tokens to record their medical procedures and milestones in the form of unique beads.
For every test or procedure, Oncology Staff will give you your beads next time you are at the hospital.

These children often have many hospital stays and outpatient visits, and during these times the children may need to go through medical procedures that can be challenging. This Little Star Beads program at the John Hunter Children’s Hospital was created to offer a positive experience to children who are diagnosed with a serious, long-term illness.
The string of beads provided will become a very special memento for the children and their families, and a symbol of pride and courage for all the challenges that they have experienced.
